The Philadelphia Eagles face the Green Bay Packers today at 4:30pm at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. I have been thinking about this game all week while at work and at home and here is how I see things going into the match up.
Eagles: As I have always said then need to run the ball. Shady McCoy has came into his own this year leading the team in rushing yards and receptions(207 carries for 1080 yards and 78 receptions for 592 yards). He needs 20 to 25 touches today and if he gets those touches the Eagles will most likely win the game.
Mike Vick has to learn from the Vikings game and see the blitz and find the hot receiver, meaning McCoy and Celek could have big games catching the ball in the middle of the field. Lately Vick has been making some bad decisions with the ball and the Eagles can’t afford that today.
Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg must call a good game and make adjustments during the game. Reid is a stubborn coach as we have seen over the years and it has cost the Eagles numerous times. A good dosage of screens and draws will slow down the Packers blitzing pass rush and will allow later on for those big plays deep to DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.
Finally it all starts upfront and the Offensive line of the Eagles was putrid against the Vikings. They have to man the hell up and protect Vick or this game could get ugly. But as I previously said Reid could do them a favor by running the ball more.
In order for the Bird to have any chance of slowing the Packers offense down, the must generate a pass rush with the front four. Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is one of the best in the league against the blitz, so the defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has to mix up calls today in an attempt to confuse Rodgers. It would also be nice if Trent Cole showed up at the end of the season for once.
The Packers have no running game and it needs to stay that way. The Eagles need to do a great job against the run and tackling. MLB Jamar Chaney has played well since he has replaced Stewart Bradley in the lineup. His speed makes up for him being out of positon at times and he is better then Bradley sideline to sideline and in pass coverage.
The Eagles need a big play or two out of Asante Samuel today. He might not get that many opportunities being as though teams have exposed CB Dmitri Patterson as the 4th corner he really is. All it takes is one right guess by Samuel and it could be a pick 6. But one pump fake by Rodgers and he could be burned for 6. Safeties Quentin Mikell and Kurt Coleman need to make the basic sound tackles and be in position at all times to make plays.
With that being said, I believe with Vick at the helm there will be 2 or 3 plays that he will make that will determine the outcome of the game. Plays that other Quarterbacks can’t make or escape from. And those 2 or 3 games will allow the Eagles to advance to the next round of the playoffs. Eagles 28 Packers 27 Side note: the over/under is 46 1/2……bet the over. Let’s Go BIRDS!!!!!
