Mike Vick shredded the the Jacksonville Jaguars for 291 yards passing(3 TD’s) and one more TD on the ground, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 28-3 victory today. Vick did most of his damage from the pocket completing 17 out of his 31 passes, going through his progressions and hitting his receivers for some big plays down field. DeSean Jackson(5 catches 153 yards 1 TD) and Jeremy Maclin(4 catches 83 yards 2 TD’s) were constantly getting open downfield against the putrid Jaguars secondary, who have been burned for big plays by the Broncos and Chargers in their 2 previous games.
The Eagles defense played well today against a Jags offense that tried establishing the run early on in the game but had to pass the ball because they found themselves behind. They held the Jags to just 184 yards of total offense( 130 rushing and 54 passing) and three points for the game. The defensive line played their butts off totaling five sacks in the game and putting constant pressure on Jags QB David Garrard who finished the game completing 13 of 30 passes for 105 yards and a QB rating of 38.9. Eagles CB Asante Samuel recored his first interception of the season, picking off Garrard in the third quarter which led to a Eagles touchdown pass from Vick to Maclin which gave the Eagles a 21-3 lead and the game was out of reach. Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew was held to 88 yards on 22 carries today, the presence of Eagles MLB Stewart Bradley really makes a difference for this team against the run.
Vick continues to do well staying in the pocket and hitting Maclin and Jackson for big plays down the field. Jackson and Maclin were great, and Celek caught 4 passes for 42 yards today also. The interior of the offensive line is still shaky, allowing Jags DT Terrance Knighton to record 1.5 sacks in the game. RB LeSean McCoy carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards(4.9 yards per carry). The team had a total of 106 yards rushing on 21 carries for an average of 5 yards per carry.
Gave up 3 points all game and 184 yards of total offense. Need I say more??? OK let’s not take it too far, the Jags offense is nothing to brag about but you have to play who’s on your schedule and the Eagles defense came to play today. Jags RB Maurice Jones-Drew was shut down today and the passing game was a non factor for the Jags due to the pass rush of the Eagles front four. Eagles DT Trevor Laws(6 solo tackles 1 sack 2TFL) played the best game of his career today. He was very disruptive, spending the majority of his time on the field in the Jags backfield raising hell for David Garrard. The return of LB Stewart Bradley really made a difference compared to last week. He brings size, attitude, and a physical presence that the Birds missed last week while he was out. DE’s Trent Cole(2 sacks) and Jaqua Parker(1 sack) continue to provide pressure on the QB that was non existent last season. The secondary wasn’t really challenged today and Asante Samuel picked off his first pass of the season today.
Next Game: 10-3-10 Home against the Washington Redskins 4:15 pm on FOX
Vick will really have a test against the tough Skins defense next week. This will be a week in which a balanced attack would really benefit the Birds, considering how well the Skins get to the QB. As we all know, if the Eagles get to McNabb and rattle him, along with stopping the run, they will win this game. This is the most anticipated Eagles regular season game in my 25 years of watching them play football. I can’t wait to see how this one turns out. Who would have known??? Vick versus McNabb…..this is must see TV.
