After the offense playing brutal and losing two starters to concussions in the first half, Mike Vick started the second half for the injured Kevin Kolb(5-10 24 yds in the first half) and almost led the Eagles to a come from behind victory against the Green Bay Packers. The Birds just didn’t put a full game together this Sunday. They scored only three first half points and were lucky to only be down 13-3 at halftime. Linebacker Stewart Bradley left the game late in the second quarter with a concussion and did not return after halftime, leaving a void in the middle of the Eagles defense which the Packers exposed with runs up the middle and passes to TE Jermicheal Finley.
Michael Vick(175 yds passing 103 yds rushing) led the Eagles to 17 second half points and almost led a game tie drive in the 4th quarter that was stopped on a 4th and 1 in which Vick was stopped on a qb sneak. The Eagles also lost two players to big injuries that might be season ending, FB Leonard Weaver(torn ACL) injured his knee on a gruesome play in the second quarter after being tackled low while running the ball. Center Jamaal Jackson who returned early from a torn ACL injury that occurred in week 16 of last season, tore his biceps muscle and is most likely done for the year, leaving the Eagles already below average offensive line depleted. The defense was gashed by the run in the second half and Ellis Hobbs was beaten deep by Packers WR Greg Jennings for a 32 yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter. This isn’t the way you want to start your season, but the good thing is they play the Detroit Lions next week.
Grades by position
Kevin Kolb- F
Mike Vick- B+
Even though the O-line played brutal while he was in the game. Kolb made some bad decisions with the ball. I f the Packers could catch the ball, Kolb would have thrown three picks in the first half. Vick came in the game and provided a much needed spark to a dead offense. His only mistake was on the play where he tried to force a pass to DeSean Jackson in the back of the endzone when he could have ran it in easily himself.
Running Backs- C
Shady McCoy had twelve touches for 84 yards(7 carries and 5 receptions). He really wasn’t given much of a chance to run the ball, which is no surprise and his pass protection was awful. He also missed a block on Clay Matthews on the 4th and 1 play which decided the game. Eldra Buckley caught one pass and turned it over to the other team.
Receivers and Tight Ends- C
For the third straight game against top notch cornerbacks DeSean Jackson was a no show. 4 catches for 30 yards is a disgrace and it’s time that Jackson is called to the carpet. Teams have figured if you become physical with him, bump him at the line and disallow him to get deep, he’s not a factor due to his size. He’s a one trick pony people, if he’s not catching the ball deep, he’s useless. Due to the play of the O-line TE Brent Celek was forced to stay in and block, basically taking him out of the offense.
Offensive Line- D
Horrible in pass protection, was given the chance to wear down the Packers front against the run. Losing Center Jamaal Jackson is going to hurt. Mike McGlynn and Nick Cole simply aren’t starters in this league, and fans better hope that G Reggie Wells is ready to play next week. I would hate to see Ndamakong Suh busting free through the line next week in Detroit.
Defensive Line- C+
Did an excellent job getting to the QB in the first half, but allowed big runs up the middle at the end of the 2nd quarter and during the second half. DT Mike Patterson was getting his ass kicked on a regular basis, being pushed 5 to 6 yards off the ball. DE Juqua Parker had 2 sacks and DE Trent Cole added 1.
Was doing a good job flying to the ball and making tackles before Bradley went out with the concussion. Akeem Jordan and Omar Gaither took turns missing tackles against the run in the second half, while being out of position in zones against the pass. Ernie Sims was solid in his first game as an Eagle. The Birds better hope Bradley isn’t out too long or it’s going to be a problem.
Defensive Backs- C
Played an average game as a group, picking off two passes(Nate Allen and Joselio Hanson). But the missed tackles by Quetin Mikell and the dropped interception by Asante Samuel could have changed the game. Mikell has been exposed as a boarder line starter ever since Brian Dawkins left this team last season. Ellis Hobbs was beat deep in the 3rd quarter, and I don’t know if it was a mix up in coverage or not but he gave Greg Jennings a clean release up the field.
